If your windscreen is only chipped, it can usually be repaired, provided the chip meets the criteria for size and position. However, if the glass is cracked, it cannot be repaired, and a replacement is required. The reason for this is that even if the crack looks minor, it undermines the strength of the windscreen as a whole – and that puts your safety, and that of your passengers, at risk.

There are DIY windscreen repair kits available online and in auto stores. However, they are not the cheap option and results are often below average which may result in needing a new windscreen.

You would be better served having a professional windscreen repair rather than using a DIY kit.

Yes, it is illegal to drive with a cracked windscreen is NSW. There are specific rules in NSW about the acceptance size of windscreen defects which may result in your vehicle being un-roadworthy.

In most cases we avoid installing glass in the rain for both safety and manufacturer reasons. When mobile service is required, we need suitable shelter like a garage or underground car park to perform the service.

If it’s a chip repair, absolutely. If it’s a windscreen replacement, we need to know ahead of time, so make sure you let us know when you make a booking because auto-sensor windscreens are a bit more high-tech than standard ones. If you aren’t sure, check the model of the car against the manufacturer’s advice, which will let you know if you have auto-senses. For a chip repair, you can expect us to be working for approximately half an hour.

For windscreen replacements, it usually takes around an hour but depends on a few factors – we’d always recommend leaving yourself a bit of time between seeing us and your next calendar appointment as all replacements need one additional hour to allow the glue to set!
